Call Of Duty: Black Ops 2 Breaks Day 1 Sales Record
For the fourth year in a row, Activision breaks records and is well on its way to another billion-dollar payload.
Activision announced today that Call of Duty Black Ops 2 made $500 million on its first day at retail (Xbox 360, PC & PS3). Last year’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 made $400 million in the first 24 hours, while the original Black Ops raked in $360 million in 2010, and Modern Warfare 2 made $310 million the year before that.
“With first day sales of over half a billion dollars worldwide, we believe Call of Duty is the biggest entertainment launch of the year for the fourth year in a row,” said Bobby Kotick, CEO, Activision Blizzard, Inc. “Life-to-date sales for the Call of Duty franchise have exceeded worldwide theatrical box office receipts for “Harry Potter” and “Star Wars,” the two most successful movie franchises of all time. Given the challenged macro-economic environment, we remain cautious about the balance of 2012 and 2013.”
As a point of comparison, Halo 4 made $220 million in sales in its 24 hours, though of course it’s a single-platform game. Activision will look to keep this trend going as there have already been rumors that 2013 will bring us Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 from Infinity Ward.
