The Tomb Raider franchise has been around since 1996, following protagonist explorer Lara Croft through adventures in several sequels and even a couple Hollywood blockbuster movies starring Angelina Jolie.
Despite having suffered through changing developers, publishers, and undergoing some current controversy as to the direction of the upcoming reboot title, the Tomb Raider series will undoubtedly draw attention due to its prior popularity: Over 35 million copies of the previous games have been sold altogether, and the two feature films collected over $300 million at the box office.
This reboot explores the intense and gritty origin story of Lara Croft and her ascent from a frightened young woman to a hardened survivor. Armed only with raw instincts and the ability to push beyond the limits of human endurance, Lara must fight to unravel the dark history of a forgotten island to escape its relentless hold.
The new Tomb Raider game, developed by Crystal Dynamics, is set to be published by Square Enix on March 5, 2013.
