President of Polyphony Digital and creator of the franchise, Kazunori Yamauchi, officially announced today that Gran Turismo 6 is in development for the PlayStation 3 with a targeted released window of ‘Holiday 2013’.
At an event celebrating 15 years of Gran Turismo at Silverstone in the UK, Yamauchi stated “I’d like to announce today that we are developing GT 6 for the holiday season this year on the PlayStation 3. The game engine will be renewed for GT6, we’ll be cleaning it up, making it smoother for the future. The rendering engine will be completely renewed for GT 6, there will be a revamped Physics Engine, new suspension, tire and aerodynamics modeling. We’ll have 200 more cars than Gran Turismo 5, with 1200 available at release. More cars will be released after launch, too.”
All cars and tracks from GT5 will be preserved. Amongst the track line-up, the UK’s famous Silverstone Circuit will be just one of seven new locations in Gran Turismo 6, taking the total to 33, with 71 different layouts available — 19 of them brand new. Additional sets of new tracks will be released every month via DLC. There will be a new course maker, and players will be encouraged to create their own racing communities and championships. The course maker will also include a new GPS data feature, which will increase the freedom of track creation in the game.
An accompanying Sony press release expands that it will also feature “expanded connectivity with other devices such as smart phones and tablets and increased social and community functions”.
Don’t fret future PS4 owners because Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi told IGN, “We actually do have a PlayStation 4 version in mind, but for this holiday season, we thought it would be best for users to release on PS3 for now.”
There will be a demo available in July with more info coming out of E3 and Gamescom.
